MAY EPIC BIKE RIDE: MT. LEMMON |
| Date: |
5/20/2012 |
| Time: |
4:45:00 AM |
| Location: |
Mt.Lemmon, Tucson |
| Description: |
Time for the next IMAZe/FWT Club epic bike ride: Mt. Lemmon on Sunday, May 20, in Tucson…meet at the Target/AMC DV 30 parking lot, specifically in front of the AMC theatre, at Loop 101 and 27th Ave. We will consolidate and car pool down to Tucson.
Sorry for the late notice...I thought I had posted this a week ago! My bad. This will take most of the day, so plan accordingly.
All are welcome…you don’t have to be in IMAZe to be a part of this month’s epic bike ride. Thanks to Nate for many of the details of this ride and some comments from Cheryl as well, since I haven’t ever done Mt. Lemmon before…
In Tucson, we will meet at the Safeway on the North East corner of Catalina Hwy and E. Tanque Verde Rd. Catalina Hwy has a bike lane in both directions from the Safeway. It will add about 10 more miles to the ride, but we have the convenience of the grocery store that way.
We can make two stops on the way up. One at Molino Basin Campground about 6.5 miles up and the other at Windy Point about 13.5 miles up. There is really no need to stop at Molino Basin unless we really need to. Windy Point is a good place to regroup since its half way. Some last trip just head straight up. So, we’ll probably need to know who is doing what. After Windy Point we headed up to the Ski Area. You have to pay attention for the right hand turn for E. Ski Run Road, because at that point you’ll be going downhill and will have some speed and it’s easy to miss. This takes us up to the parking lot of the slopes. You’ll know you’re on the right road, because it will be the hardest grade of the day. Although its only for about a mile. stayed at the parking lot until everyone made it up. Last time we were supposed to get cookies from a place in Summerhaven but never made it over there. I think it’s called Mt Lemmon Cookie Cabin. Once we regrouped we headed straight down. No stops. We’ll all be doing 30+ almost the whole way down. PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!! There is nothing to be gained by going too fast, and have you ever flatted while going 30+ MPH? I have, and it’s no joy ride…
Time wise it will probably be about 4 hours. 3 hours up and about 1 hour down. As far as hydration is concerned… I’m not sure where there are any water stops. PLAN ON BRINGING ALL OF YOUR OWN WATER just in case. We most likely won’t have a SAG vehicle (by the way, does anyone want to SAG for this ride??? ) Also BRING A JACKET/ARM WARMERS, since it can be cold at the top. Some of us will be going to Trisports.com on the other side of town after lunch, so carpool with Bruce if you want to go there as well.
